First, place the image in grayscale if possible. This can be done in color, but it is more difficult.



Click "Select > Color Range..."
A box will appear, make sure the settings match the ones in the image above.
Click on the dropper without the (+) or (-) sign and on the orange image, click on the darkest line.
The picture in the box should go dark. This area will be selected. The (dropper +) increases the the amount of that color when you click on the orange image and (dropper -) decreases it.
Fiddle around until you can get a decent image. It gets easier with practice. Click OK when your done.



You have just created a selection. Click "Select > Inverse"
Then "Edit > Copy", "Edit > Paste". This puts the picture on its own layer.
I usually use this technique in order to color the sketch. It is easier to adjust the Levels of the image if you are only working with black and white.
